  1. Landlords were very plentiful in Ireland long ago and all the farmers had to be subject to them. Every landlord had his own area to rule. The landlord that ruled round Knock was lord Dillon and he had his residence in Claremorris. He was a very good landlord and ruled well and he was the best landlord in Mayo. He was a very charitable landlord. Sometimes when any of his tenants was not able to pay their rents every year he would let them off and give them full receipt. Landlordism long ago was a frightful torment to the farmers. Landlords had no compassion for the farmers if the people were not able to pay their rents the landlord would send a "sherrif" to evict them. Evictions were more tormenting long ago than fighting with the sword. Sherrifs at that time were worse than their landlords for evicting the people. If any one turned back to get anything when the sherrif had ordered to out they would be put to death there
