    a hammer. It is an old belief that if the smith washes himself in the water in which the iron is cooled he would be made stronger, and there is luck in the spark that fly from the red iron. There is a story told when the Blessed Virgin was going to Bethlehem she happened to lose the pin of her coat. She met two men and asked a pin of them, but they refused her. She then went into a forge and asked the smith for a pin and he made a pin out of a bit of iron. She blessed him, and it is said that the smith is blessed.
