    spoken by master and pupils. The books used were spelling books and an Irish Catechism. The writing was done with quill pens and slate pencils.
    Each child had to bring a straw mat to the hedge school to sit on. These mats were arranged along the wall of the barn school. There was a blackboard in every one of these schools. The teachers did not stay long in each district, as the people could not afford to keep them. They usually went from district to district teaching in barn schools and in hedge schools. The people were badly educated in former times.
