  1. In this district the roofs of the dwelling houses were made of thatch in olden times. There was always a bed in the kitchen beside the fire and it was called a "hag". The fireplace was nearly always in the gable wall, except in a house that had no chimney, then the fire was lighted in the middle of the floor and there was a hole in the roof near it for the smoke to go out. The old floors were made of flags. Each dwelling had a half door to keep out the hens and chickens. Wood was used as fuel, because turf was hard to get. The beasts were kept inside the home because no out-houses were provided for them.
