- A soldier had served a king many years till at last he was turned off without pay or reward. He did not know how he should get his living.
He journeyed homeward all day in a very down east wood and in the evening he came to a wood. There was a road leading to Roscommon and he had not gone far when he saw a light shining through the trees. He soon came to a hut where no one lived, but an old witch. The poor fellow begged for a night's lodging and something to eat, and drink but she would listen to nothing.
