  1. A soldier had served a king many years till at last he was turned off without pay or reward. He did not know how he should get his living.
    He journeyed homeward all day in a very down east wood and in the evening he came to a wood. There was a road leading to Roscommon and he had not gone far when he saw a light shining through the trees. He soon came to a hut where no one lived, but an old witch. The poor fellow begged for a night's lodging and something to eat, and drink but she would listen to nothing. However he was not easily rid of and at least she sad "I will take pity on you this time, but if
