He knew that if he got over the mearing wall she could follow him no farther. When he came to within a yard or two of the wall, he made a spring for it, at the same time giving a back stroke of the hawthorn to the woman, which knocked her to the ground; as she was falling she said, "You are a brave man, but you may thank your blackthorn, an the mearing, or you would be a dead man."From neighbour, Mrs. Thornton, 90yrs
