- (continued from previous page)bulrushes and peel them. Then she melted some tallow and soaked the bulrushes in it. When they were dry, and left aside for some time, they burned very well, and showed great light.
There were no brushes to sweep the house like those which we have now. There was an old man over in Cloonline, and he used to pull a big heap of heather every Friday, and he used to make little brooms of it. He used to take an ass-cart full of brooms to Tuam every Saturday, and he used to get a penny for each little broom. This was the only means of living he had. (From Mother. Mrs. Burke, 40 yrs.)
- The old mill in Shrule was built about two hundred years ago. The Black River was running beside it, and the water of the river turned the wheel that worked the Mill. John Walsh's grand--father worked in it and my great grandfather worked there. It became disused about eighty years ago, some time after the famine.
There was a Brewery in Shrule in the building that was used later as stores by Mr. Golding. There was a weekly market in Shrule, and the farmers used to bring in oats, and wheat and barley, and they were bought for the Brewery. - Collector
