    they leave the house at six o’clock and come home at four or five o’clock.
    Long ago the fair day was a great day for the country people. When they had their stock sold they went into a public house for a drink. The chief drink they took was a bowl of punch and mulled beer. Sometimes they started matchmaking.
    After the fair the boys went home and had their tea. They came into the town and had a faction fight. (This fight was) Everyone would bring a black thorn stick with him. Sometimes people were killed in these fights. They had a certain house near the Bank of Ireland called “teach na gcipín”. In this house all the sticks were stored up until the next fairs. Every fair
