  1. There was a water-horse once in Ballinsmalla. There is a story told about it. It is - One day a man named Prendergast was letting out his horse in the field. There was a big pond in the field. when he was letting the horse go, he hit it with his stick. Then the horse ran and ran around the field and at last it ran straight into the pond and disappeared. Every day after that he came to the field and ate the grass. If anybody tried to catch him, he ran into the pond.
