In Winter cows are tied by a chain in the cow - house. Each cow has a certain place and is tied there to a post of wood or iron by a chain. The chains are tied round their necks. Sometimes in Summer the cows are tied by a rope called a side - long. It ties the horn and foot together. There is an emblem hung up in the cow house, a cross made of wood and straw. It is said to be a guard against fire.- Collector
