  1. There was a terrific storm around this district in 1882. Our local doctor was driving in a car from Castlebar to Augamore (Ballyhaunis). He brought with him a "hatchet and saw" to cut and chop the trees, which the storm had knocked along the roads. He had to protect his face on the journey from the thatch which was being continually blown from the roofs of the houses. The point of the straw was sharp and would cut his face. Owing to the force of the storm, he couldn't reach home that night.
