    They had no candles or lamps at that time. They used to have candles made of rushes. At first they used to peal the skin off the rushes and leave them steeping in gravy a few hours. They used to have wooden candle sticks also.
    They used not have any bolts or latches but they used to have a stick from one jamb to another across the door which was called a "marde "Eamuinn." [?]
    They used to be a heap of manure out side the front door. They had no other place to put it because the cattle would tramp it. There used to be a hole in the middle of the heap. They used to put the dirty water into it. Then it was called a sink. They used to put all the broken glass and many other things into it.
