  1. (continued from previous page)
go out in the field and cut two carts of rushes. He would put rushes inside the straw. The best straw for thatching a house is wheaten straw. The thatcher also requires a long ladder.
The straw the thresher threshes is no good for thatching because it is too short. Bobbins are put on the comb of the house. Barley straw is no good for thatching because it is too short. It would take a man five days to thatch a house.
Most of the people long ago had thatched houses and good thatchers were well employed. A good thatcher does not want as many pegs as a bad one.
If the straw was not well threshed the oats would start growing on the top of the house. Sally rods are the best rods for thatching a house. When a man is thatching he has a wooden hammer for driving the pegs on the thatch.
