called the "cailleach" where the old woman slept, and a mat of straw hung over it for a curtain. And there was a low chair made of straw in the corner called a "suidhsteóg" where she used to sit, and it was very comfortable.
For light they had rush candles or a little tin lamp with a wick of corduroy, and no globe so that the house was full of smoke. Sometimes they had bogdeal burning in the fire to show light and when the woman of the house was ironing the children had to hold it up to give her light.
