  1. All children are very fond of making toys. Little girls make dolls of rags and woll, they make the face and cover it with a white cloth, they then paint the eyes and the nose and mouth with ink.Others make dolls from a potato and put two sticks through it for the feet and a small potato with eyes for the head, they make dresses and coats and dress the doll nicely.
    In summer they make chains and wreaths of daises and wear them around their necks of course they don't last long as the flowers wither. Some make beautiful neck-laces from wallnuts, as some of them are of a nice yellow colour those mixed with the brown ones look lovely. Almost every child can skip , and doing these things they spend most of their time.
    Long ago playing jack stones was a great pastime, each girl would have five round stones and if they were sent on a message they would sit down and have a game of jack stones, no matter how great their hurry was.
    Another pastime was making "houses" and gathering all kinds of broken delph
