    few farmers here have above two milch cows:
    This means only two calves a year. But as the milk of one cow can "rear" two or even three calves. the other calves must be bought; for there being very little butter making here "only enough for the house" the new milk is fed to calves till they are 3 or even 4 and sometimes up to 6 months old.
    Some of the calves required are bought from town milk sellers, but this not being enough to supply the demand - call jobbers go to the South of Ireland - to the dairying districts - generally Limerick, North Kerry and Cork as far as Millstreet; buy the unwanted calves there and sell them in the Connaught markets at least in these parts
