  1. This information was given me by Very Rev. Canon (?) Reidy - who roofed part of the abbey
    The Abbey was roofless for many years as I have said - and there was a prophecy that if the Abbey were roofed, the family of Stanton or Staunton would fall upon evil days.
    When Father Reidy was roofing the Abbey - Dr. McEvilly was Arch-Bishop of Tuam in which diocese Ballintubber is:
    The Archbishop according to the tale prevented Fr. Reidy from completing the work that is re-roofing the entire edifice afraid that the old prophecy might be fulfilled, in himself -
    For there is a tradition that the McEvillys were originally Stauntons: having changed
