    a mermaid is seen sitting on a rock combing her hair. When she has it combed she puts a net in her hair and if anyone gets the mermaid and takes the net from her, as long as they have the net, the mermaid cannot go away.

  2. The people say that mermaids live in an enchanted home under the lake or sea and are often seen sitting on the rocks combing their hair. Their hair is of a brownish colour and is very long, and they have a body like any human person but they have a tail like a fish. They wear a net on their hair and if a person got that net they could not go under the water. Sometimes if the mermaid sits on a rock near the shore, people come unawares of her and catch her.
    I often heard the people of this village tell of a man called Roche who lived in Derryhick which is situated at the eastern end of this parish. In that village there is a small lake which is called Derryhick Lake. One fine morning as he was passing by that lake he saw a beautiful lady sitting on a rock at the edge of the lake and he knew that she was a mermaid
