    About the year 1590 Sir John Bingham, brother of Sir Richard purchased Edmund Burke's Castlebar estate from Brian Fitzwilliam the Lord Deputy's brother.
    In 1591 he commenced building the castl.e which his Burkes had almost demolished.
    The only relics of Barry's Castle remaining are the two piers at the entrance both to the Convent and the military barracks.
