  1. The fool.
    There was a fool of a fella wan time and he went into a field where men were working at turnips. He asked the men what were the turnips and they said that they were. They knew then that the man was a fool or pretended that he was and they told him that they were mare’s eggs. The man was a fool all right and he bought won of them. [?] boys took the money and all from him. When the lad was goin home he let the turnip fall out of his hand into a clump of bushes. The moment he did what the dickens hopped out of it only a hare and went away accross the fields like lightening. The man threw up his hands when he saw it and let a pityful moan out of himself. “Oh” says
