Mostly all oaten meal bread was in use in this district in ancient times. The wheat and oats was grown locally and some of the farmers ground their own grain with a little instrument called a quern. Others got their oats ground at a neighbouring mill at Gortgannigan on the banks of the Bonet. Potato bread and boxty was also often made and this was mixed with milk and water. In more places a great deal of bread was baked at one time.
