    The Tanneries of Mullingar
    In olden times Mullingar had two tanneries which we may boast about. One of these was situated off the lane leading to the Presentation Convent. It was owned by a man named Tuite who afterwards sold it to the Dowdall family. They working hard all the week produced large quantities of leather for the town and supplied factories in the town also. On the outside of the tannery were three big holes in which the hide was put down to harden. Nailer Lacey was the man who made
