    The last day of October was called Hallows Eve, they ate apples, boxty, and nuts. They played games and sang. And they thought that on that night the fairies poisoned the blackberries. Sometimes they made what was called potato apple cake, the pastry in this was neely potato cake, with the filling of apples and some sugar.
    People also made indian meal pancakes, butter milk gruel, porridge made on sweet skim milk, barley meal bread (this was called bare meal in the famine times), and when they had salt herring or fish they steeped them in buttermilk to remove the salt.
    In some districts fish were caught, cleaned and salted, and then hung in the chimney for weeks until they were well dried and smoked, then they would keep for months.
    At those times it was quite common to boil the goose or turkey at Christmas. Rye porridge and rye bread were also eaten. They were a very dark colour.
