  1. The houses that are built now are a good deal different from the houses that were built long ago. All the houses were thatched long ago. The people grew the corn themselves. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen and it was called a settle-bed. The settle bed was placed at the side wall. The fire places were always at the side walls.. The fire places were never in the corner.
    The front of the chimney was made of mortar and stones. The old people did not hear or see of houses having no chimneys. There was never a fire in the centre of the floor. There are accounts of houses which had
