  1. In years gone by houses were made of mud and yellow clay and they were called cabins.
    The roofs were thatched with marsh, barley straw and wattles. The marsh was got from the bogs and the straw from the haggard.
    Most of the houses had a bed in the kitchen which was called a "settle" and if any old traveller came around he would get the loan of the "settle" for the night.
    The fire place was placed at the gable wall in a one roomed house but in a bigger house it was placed in the middle of the floor or against the side
