    in the same district went to Croagh soup-house. When they saw the old Parson, one said to the other, "We will die of hunger rather than join him". As they were coming home one of the men turned back and wrote on the piers of the Church gate.
    "Souper Souper do not fret,
    For it is stirabout you must get,
    You get it hot, coarse or fine,
    And twont be served til half-past nine".
    Askeaton soupers caused Rev. Father Fitzgerald of Rathkeale a lot of trouble. He composed a song against them called the new-lights of Askeaton."Those new lights of Askeaton, whose sad fate I do deplore". He wrote the song with his left hand so that his writing would not be recognized and posted it up all over Askeaton
