Essex visited Adare in 1599, according to tradition. He quartered his horses one night in the ruins of the Augustinian Abbey near the bridge. The Castle was then in possession of the Sugan Earl. In 1600 it was abandoned to Carew. In 1657 it was dismantled by order of Cromwell.
