    Ledger man and trading clown,
    Was preferred before De Freyne

    Pledged his troth in Balyneale
    To the coy and shrinking maiden,
    Listening to his ardent tale,
    She, by wild ambition prompted,
    Sold her heart and catered sin,
    And henceforth her pleasing features,
    Hid a serpent heart within.

    See again those lovers walking,
    Not through forest pathway deep,
    But where spreads an open meadow,
    Under Ballyreddy's keep,
    Where beneath the golden sunset,
    Through the grass a fountain springs,
    And a dark-haired child beside them,
    Hears them plotting wicked things
