    But with this there came a ruin,
    With the bliss so fondly sought,
    Came a cloud above their heaven,
    Thunder charged and danger frought,
    For the knight was sorely troubled,
    With a jealous fever fit,
    Which along his once calm features,
    Like a poisoned friend would flit.

    Ah! the maiden was she faithless?
    Could she that dear love forgot?
    Which had made these halls desrted,
    When once his proud guests often met.
    Was there then another wooer
    Happy in the guilty love?
    Ask the stars that shine above her.
    Speak it thou chaste moon above.

    See it is a spacious orchard,
    Stretching from the castle foss,
    Old times all with ripe fruit laden,
    Lichen-stained and thick with moss,
    Ancient trees all trimmed with silver
    Sleeping in the dreary light.
    Of the mild and tranquil moonbeams,
    In the solemn trail of night.
