- There is believed to be a pot of gold hidden in a field belonging to Tommy O Gara a neighbour of mine. This field is situated about a mile from Kilfree Junction in the townland of Drumlistna, parish of Kilfree, County Sligo. The local belief is that it was placed there by the Danes. It was placed there lest anyone would find it at that time.
The belief was that anyone that would go in search of it had to go at twelve oclock at night and he would see a flag over the spot. A man named Pat Toolan of Chasefield made an attempt to unearth it. When he dug up the flag an evil spirit appeared in the form of a black man on the hill over him and said that if he wanted to have his life safe to get away from there at once. The man was expected not to take any notice of what would appear but keep on digging. But he got afraid and went home as quickly as he could. This man that made the attempt died soon afterwards.
The treasure consists of hundreds of gold coins. The gold has never been really unearthed in my district as the people of the locality are afraid of the evil spirit.- Collector
