  1. In slumber deep poor Erin lay
    A suffering nation sleeping
    And loving sons therein did pray
    Around their mothers weeping
    While freedom's hope shone forth in joy
    Aound one cottage door

    One Summer eve the heather bells,
    Gave answer to that thralling
    He heard sweet murmurs in the dells
    It was his mother calling
    Good bye, dear son, good bye to you,
    Her Spartan cry came o'er
    mavrone, to thine own self be true

    The battle raged with fury's sway
    By night, by noon and morning
    And many a hero dying lay,
    Beside his arms adorning
    Alas! soon fighting death took Shaun,
    To martyr lands bright shore
