    The cake was wet with water and having been mixed and well kneaded it was placed in a standing position near the fire propped up by an iron bar in the form of a slate called a grid iron. There was no soda but a pinch of salt put in the cake so that when it was baked it was very flat and slim in contrast with the bulky appearance of the soda bread used here now. This must have been very healthy food as in those times there were no toothaches or internal troubles such as we have at the present time.
