    It is customary to take three steps, at least, with a funeral before going against it.

    If you look into a mirror at night you will see the devil peeping over your shoulder at you into the glass.

    A girl once thought that she would like to find out who her husband would be so on November Eve she sat before a mirror & began to eat an apple in the name of the Devil. The Devil appeared behind her & she got so frightened that she went off her head.
    This story is probably the origin of the above-mentioned superstition.

    If you are card-playing on Nov. Night & are losing & want to win, go out into the garden & go under a briar in the name of the Devil & when you come in you will win all on the table, but it is sure to go bad.
