"May all the saints in Heaven above
Pray to Thee O God of Love
That the souls of our dear friends
May rest in peace. Amen. Amen"
November 11th is St. Martin's Day. On that day people kill cocks and millers stop their mills for that day and sprinkle the blood of the fowl on the quern (mill stones). Many tailors and dressmakers observe the custom and do not turn a while since twelve o'clock the night before.
It is said that St. Martin was martyred by being killed in a mill, hence the custom. A verse on this custom is:-
Now's the time for shedding blood
For cooling winds and heavy flood
Winter's cold is just a starting'
Now we honour great St. Martin.
On St. Bridget's Night people used to make crosses of straw, the grain(continues on next page)- Collector
