    The Great Famine (condt)
    In the middle of the ninteenth century Ireland was struck by a terrible Famine. It was started by the English landlords charging very high rents. Most of the crops and animals had to be sold to pay these rents so that the Irish people were dependent entirely upon potatoes. In the year 1846 the potato crop failed. It happened very suddenly.
