    Festival Customs 1st May
    Skerries, Co. Dublin
On the first of May, or "May-bush-Day" as it is called a big bush is put in the ground. Candles and flowers are put on the bush. The candles are lighted and the children catch hands and dance and sing round the bush for hours. When the candles are all burnt out, the children strike a match and set the bush alight. Then they watch it burn to ashes.
