  1. In olden times people had to make their own lights. They had no lamps nor no oil to burn.
The candles which were made were made out of resin. We bought the resin and melted it down in a pot. We then got the inside of a rush, and dipped it into the resin. We did this several times until it was thick enough. Other people never made candles. they got fir and cut it into small pieces about the thickness of a match, and lit it.
