  1. There is an old legend related concerning St Declan of Ardmore and a pagan named Dercan who in hatred of the Christian name invited St Declan to a feast. He had a dog cooked for St. Declan and laid before him as mutton but as soon as the Saint made the sign of the Cross over the dish, the dog restored to life leaped off the table and dashed throught he open door, and fled over this gap which has ever since borne this name. He ran down through Kilbrien and Colligan and into Gleannna Madraidh.
