  1. In Ballyvoile a family named Foley used to make straw hats from wheaten reed. These hats were rain proof and much heavier than the rush hats. The plait was made first then stitched tightly together by a needle.
    Flax was grown all over the district in olden times. Linen [made] towels, sheets, table cloths were woven in the homes.
