    out of his pipe into fire. No person should leave the house, or no fire should should be taken away while a churning is being made.
    In most houses, the person who rakes the fire sweeps the floor and hearth because, the fairies, it is said, dance on the latter all night. If you do not leave them a clean hearth, they will torment you all your life.
    You should not throw out any dirty water on Hallow Eve, because the fairies pass. If you do, you should say "Chugat, Chugat, uisge salac" before you throw it, to warn them to keep out of danger.
    When a person has finished milking a cow he makes the Sign of the Cross on her hip, with some milk, to bring her luck.
    It is considered very unlucky to meet a red-haired woman first, when you are going on a journey.
